Melbourne Smashers Spring Tournament 2019

Sat, 28 Sep 2019
09:00 - 16:00

Melbourne Smashers Spring Tournament.

Get your Partners ready! Our next club tournament has been locked in for Saturday 28th September 2019.
This is a great opportunity to have some fun and a bit of competition. This will also be our Pre-Tournament to the Trans-Tasman Tournament that we are holding in October.

The tournament will follow the usual format and is doubles only, with a round-robin session followed by Double-Elimination Round.

When you register please note which grade you would like to be entered at, and who your playing partner is.
As part of the registration process you will be able to let us know if you don't yet have a partner, and also if you would like us to find a partner for you.
In order to keep sessions running as smoothly as possible, we will enable PAIRING in Badboard three weeks before the tournament (Sunday & Thursday sessions only).

We also have Cabinet Bar booked from 8pm for the after-tournament social

Important Rules - please read!

Based on feedback from the last tournament, the committee had introduced the following rules:-

  • At least one person in the partnership must be a member of the Melbourne Smashers or Shuttlecats Badminton Club.
  • If you are a new member, you must had at least played in 1 normal playing session and had your grading confirmed before you can sign up in the Tournament.
  • Mixed-Grade Partnerships will need to 'Play-Up' rather than down (e.g. if an A-Grade player is partnered with a B-Grade player, they must play in 'A'.  If a B & C grade partnership, they must play in B-Grade)
  • Grades will be roughly based on the Badboard rankings, (A Grade ~ 1-3, B Grade ~ 4-6, C Grade ~7-10) - with the acknowledgement that Badboard may be out of date.  Therefore, the Committee will also review grades to ensure that players are fairly allocated (e.g. if a pairing is registered for C and in Badboard Level 7, but the committee believe they should be playing in B, then the committee will advise the players that they must move up).
  • If a pairing wish to Play-Up to a higher grade they may do so (e.g. they are in BadBoard as Level 4 and therefore expected in B-Grade, if they wish to play up to A-Grade they may.  However they cannot play down).
  • General Badminton Rules
    • The club is usually relaxed on some of the more formal rules of Badminton.  However, in preparation for the Trans-Tasman, it is worth members reviewing the formal rules of the game

    • In particular:
      Serving:
      • The serve must be hit in an upwards direction, with an underarm hitting action.
      • You are not allowed to play a tennis style serve.
      • The main rule here is that when you hit the shuttle, it must be below your waist.
      • To be exact, the rules define this to be a height level with the lowest part of your ribcage. In other words, you can serve from a bit higher than the top of your shorts, but not much
    • Line Calls
      • Line Calls are to be made at the sole discretion of the team on the side of the court where the shuttle lands.
      • Opposing players and anyone off of the court has no say in line calls (including score keeper).
      • If you do not see the shuttle land, or have any doubt as to whether or not it was in, the shuttle is to be called in.
    • Enjoy Yourself!
      • Most importantly, remember this is a socail tournament and we want everyone to participate and have fun
      • We also have the after-tournament Social at Cabinet Bar from 8pm!
